Staged Flow Treatment System (SFTS) Integrated in a Vessel

BoatOne, a yellow prototype treatment vessel with blue pontoons, on its trailer in the workshop

BoatOne

First we built a benchtop reactor to demonstrate in the lab that we could deal with algae. Then we built this prototype, with a $500,000 award from GENIUS NY, operated by CenterState, to prove that we could mitigate algae in the real world.

25-Foot Pontoon Boat

We built this larger boat for a project under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).

The Algae Shark™

We have built this boat, which was sold to a cooperative, for use in mitigating algae blooms. It is smaller, less expensive, and has a more powerful reactor than the 25-foot pontoon boat.

Algae Shark™ 2

This boat, Algae Shark™ 2, is even more powerful than the Algae Shark™ shown above. Algae Shark™ 2 is somewhat larger, and is designed to treat algae blooms in settling ponds for dredged material, whereas the Algae Shark™ is expected to treat blooms in lakes, ponds and water hazards on golf courses.

Algae Shark™ 2 is shown on a trailer specifically designed to protect the vessel in transit, and to make deployment and recovery of the vessel as easy as possible.

SFTS Bolt-On Kit

The Staged Flow Treatment System reactor for the Bolt-On Kit: an aluminum housing with a mesh intake grille, in the workshop

Already running a pontoon, work boat, or skimmer on your lake? The SFTS Bolt-On Kit adds our reactor to the vessel you already own. It draws water from the top few inches where blooms concentrate and returns it treated and oxygenated — no new hull to buy, no chemicals to store or reapply.

A Custom Reactor for Another Company’s Vessel: the CyanoShark

RanMarine Technology, the maker of the WasteShark autonomous surface vessel, asked us for a treatment device that could be added to its existing WasteShark. We accommodated them by designing a custom SFTS reactor that (a) fits within a volume RanMarine had already defined and runs on electrical characteristics RanMarine had also defined, and (b) is optimized to provide the maximum mitigation that those pre-defined constraints allow. The result is RanMarine’s CyanoShark.

We can design custom reactors for situations that involve constraints, but it is often better to discuss what you need or wish to do and let us suggest a solution that eliminates the problem you want to be rid of.

Stationary SFTS Reactor

In development

An SFTS reactor can also operate at a fixed location, with no vessel needed. We are developing this variation for applications such as:

  • swimming pools;
  • ponds;
  • water hazards on golf courses;
  • reservoirs;
  • pre-treatment of water to be processed in drinking water treatment plants;
  • post-treatment of water in wastewater treatment plants; and
  • treatment of water in settling ponds, such as ponds used to contain dredged material.
